Contraception or birth control comes in many different forms and methods, but they are all similar in that they are used to prevent pregnancy occurring as a result of having sex. There are many different forms of contraception, it is important that you find the one(s) that work for you. The two main types of contraception are the barrier method and the hormonal method.
The diaphragm (die-ah-fram) is a shallow, dome-shaped cup with a flexible rim. It is made of silicone. You insert it into the vagina. When it is in place, it covers the cervix.
It acts in the same way as the condoms worn on penises: it prevents the transfer of bodily fluids.
This condom is not placed on the penis, it is inserted into the vagina. There are two flexible rings at each end of the condom. To insert the internal condom, the inner ring should be gently squeezed together and then inserted into the vagina, like you would insert a tampon. The inner ring should be placed as close to the cervix as possible. The material attached to the inner ring lines the inside of the vagina and the surrounding area. The outer ring is left outside the vagina and partially covers the vulva.
Female condoms are 98% effective when used properly, though insertion takes practice for them to be used correctly.
Where can I get them? You can buy internal condoms in a pharmacy without a prescription, or from a reputable website.
Another barrier form of contraception for women. It is a small, flexible dome made of rubber or silicone which fits in the vagina, covering the cervix, and prevents the transfer of bodily fluids.
To get a diaphragm, you must first go to a doctor to get one fitted for you, as it’s not a one size fits all device! Once fitted by a doctor, it can be removed or put in by yourself before having sex. It should be worn up to six hours after sex, but no longer than 30 hours.
It is 92-98% effective at preventing pregnancy with very careful use. It is recommended that spermicide is used with a diaphragm, which will increase its efficacy. Even though it is a barrier method of contraception, it is important to know that a diaphragm will not protect you from getting an STI.
