Consent is another word for permission, and we often talk about consent when we talk about people doing things to our bodies such as touching them or taking photos of them or sharing those photos. This video gives some good examples about consent from someone trying to figure out how to be human.

So if you want something to happen, like a hug, say yes. And if you don’t want something to happen then say a great big N-O. And if you want to do something to someone else, make sure you get their consent too.

Sometimes we can’t give consent, such as when we are asleep or don’t understand what we are being asked. We also can’t give consent to anything if we have been drinking alcohol, using drugs or are being asked by someone with power over us who we don’t feel allowed to say no to.

As we get older and get interested in romantic and sexual relationships, it’s important to start thinking about how to be sure that you and the other person both completely consent to having a sexual relationship and what you want that to be like. This video talks about how to make that decision together.

Here is a video talking about drinking cups of tea! You’ll see why it’s relevant when you’ve watched it. When we play this in classrooms people have a lot to say about it, what do you think? Would you ever want anyone to try and give you tea if you were asleep?

Sometimes we don’t consent, but people still behave like we did. This clip talks about sexual harassment and what that means.

Here’s a girl’s story where an older young person took advantage of her. She spoke to her mother about this but wished she had talked to her earlier – what’s really important is that you talk to an adult you can trust as soon as you can if this happens.

If you’re not sure who that adult you can trust might be, Amaze has some ideas on how to figure it out.

Always remember that you can contact Childline if you need someone to listen. They won’t tell you what to do. Their website is www.childline.ie and phone number is 1800 666 666 – you can call them any time of the day or night or text or message them too.
